Payment codes
Why this one should be dynamic
Somebody paying a stranger’s code at a market wants to know one thing before they tap Pay: is this really the stall in front of me? A dynamic payment code opens a page with your name in large type beside the account the money goes to, and a report link in case the two do not match. It is also the version you can change when you switch provider or your prices go up, without peeling a sticker off every table.
Checked links
Built on the provider’s own site
Your handle is checked against that provider’s rules, then the link is rebuilt on paypal.me, venmo.com, cash.app, revolut.me, wise.com or buymeacoffee.com. A Stripe Payment Link can be on buy.stripe.com or your own domain. A payment page anywhere else must be https, and every link is screened before the code is saved.
A set price
The amount, already filled in
For PayPal.me, Venmo and Cash App the amount travels in the link, so the buyer only confirms. The other providers cannot take one that way, so the page shows it as the amount to enter.
Tips
Leave the amount empty
A tip jar or a busker’s open case works better without a figure, so each person picks their own. Add a note such as “Thanks for the coffee” and Venmo carries it into the payment.
Before it goes to print
The spec sheet for this job
With a payment code the danger is not the scan but a sticker: somebody covers yours with their own and collects your takings. Print the code into the sign itself rather than as a loose label, laminate it, and look at it each morning when you set up. Put your name and handle beside it in plain text, the same name you entered as the payee, so a buyer can match it on the checkout screen. On a market table, stand the sign up and angle it at the queue; lying flat, it reflects the sky and ends up under the stock.
Print spec
- Counter sign
- 40-50 mm, angled at the queue
- Tip jar or case
- 50 mm, readable over a shoulder
- Beside it
- Your payee name and handle in words
- Mounting
- Printed into the sign, never a loose sticker
- Before trading
- Same code, same name as yesterday
What lasts: static codes are yours forever, with no account. Dynamic codes run on a plan and keep working for 30 days after you cancel. How printed codes stay working
Static or dynamic
Which one belongs on this
Payment codes start out dynamic here, because the name-check page is the safeguard a buyer actually sees, and because a new handle or a new price would otherwise mean new signs. A static one holds the provider’s own link and costs nothing. That is fine for a one-night tip link at a gig, where you stand next to it the whole time.
Static is free forever. Dynamic is free for 3 codes, then from $12 a month.
Paid plans from $12/mo. Unlimited scans. Cancel online in two clicks.
Questions
Payment codes, answered
- Which payment apps does it work with?
- PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, Revolut, Wise, Buy Me a Coffee and Stripe payment links, plus any other https payment page. Pages on other sites are screened when you save the code.
- Do you take a cut of the payments?
- No. The money moves between the buyer and your account with the provider, and we never see or hold it. The provider’s usual fees still apply.
- Can I set a fixed amount?
- Yes, in any of 16 currencies. PayPal.me, Venmo and Cash App put it into the payment for the buyer; for the rest, the page shows it and the buyer types it in.
- How does a buyer know the code is really mine?
- The dynamic page shows your name in large type beside the account being paid, and asks the buyer to check the same name on the provider’s screen before paying. If they differ, the page has a link to report it.
- What if somebody sticks a fake code over mine?
- A buyer who checks the name will see a stranger’s, but most will not look. That is why the code belongs printed into the sign, where a sticker on top stands out, and why it is worth a glance before every market day.
- Is a payment QR code free?
- The static one is, with no account. The dynamic one with the name-check page counts as one of the 3 dynamic codes on Free.
Collecting reviews at the same counter? A review QR code that opens the rating form sits well beside this one. Swapping the provider behind a printed sign works because it is a QR code whose destination stays editable; rule-based smart QR codes go further with links that change by country or device. Marketplaces handing out codes to their sellers can use the API docs for payment codes, and the price of each plan is on one page.
